Description
A collaged piece I made for a show called "Illinois" at the McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington, Illinois. I used layer plexiglass to separate the different collage elements to make the image more three dimensional. The front of the piece depicts a typical rural landscape with the black and white stripes standing in for cultivated rows of the black dirt here. The reverse side is from a road map showing the city of Chicago and its suburbs, which account for about 66% of the Illinois population. It's far more mechanical showing a mangle of roads and the like, which contrasts greatly with the rural image, but hey, it's home. Ultimately, I think I want this piece to show the two different sides of Illinois and the struggle to accept a city or a rural life, and the fact that they are both essential to each other despite having to chose just one.
